Dr Matthieu Ricard

The French molecular geneticist and confidant of the Dalai Lama has every reason to smile - he's been named the happiest man ever tested by a group of US scientists. Ricard, a Buddhist monk who lives in Nepal, volunteered to be a subject in a study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Scans showed excessive activity in his brain's left prefrontal cortex compared with the right, indicating an enhanced capacity for happiness. Ricard says this proves the benefits of meditation.

Star Wars fans

Lovers of the cinematic sci-fi tales got a happy surprise when director George Lucas sold Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise to the Walt Disney film studio along with story treatments for Star Wars episodes 7, 8 and 9. Disney says it plans to release the first new film in 2015 with episodes 8 and 9 to follow at two or three-year intervals, and may also move some of the characters onto Disney cable channels.

Theo Walcott

The Arsenal striker turned what looked like being a League Cup disaster into an extraordinary 7-5 win against Reading with a hat-trick that inspired the Gunners to fight back from 4-0 down just before half-time. Walcott, who is at the centre of a contract dispute with the club, took his first goal just before the half-time whistle then carried on scoring. He won praise from a jubilant coach Arsene Wenger, who said the game was "maybe one of my greatest victories".
