Barack Obama

The president of the United States keeps his job - in a vote that wasn't even that close despite talk of a neck-and-neck race with Republican rival Mitt Romney. Obama's immediate concern is a battle with the Republican-held House of Representatives over a looming "fiscal cliff" of spending cuts and taxes. But after his victory, House Speaker John Boehner told him: "We want you to succeed."

Brett Prebble

The Hong Kong-based jockey on board Irish stallion Green Moon triumphed at Australia's 152nd Melbourne Cup, one of the world's richest flat races. During the 3,200-metre race, Prebble said he realised Green Moon was never going to be beaten. "I knew there wasn't any horse in this race with a turn of foot like him," he said. Prebble rejected rides on horses that went on to win in four previous Cups. "That's why it means so much to me to win it," he said. "There have been plenty of times I've come home and kicked the cat."

Guan Tianlang

The 14-year-old Chinese prodigy from Guangzhou became the youngest golfer ever to qualify for the Masters - one of the four major championships in professional golf - when he won the Asia-Pacific Championship in Thailand. Guan (pictured) said: "I'm really happy to become the youngest player at the Masters and I'm looking forward to going there. I don't know what's going to happen, I just want to do well." Last year, Chinese-born Andy Zhang, also 14 years old, made it to the US Open.
