The Jockey Club's Lunar New Year celebration smashed all records for the occasion as crowds packed Sha Tin racecourse on Tuesday. Both the day's attendance of just under 119,000 - including almost 7,000 at the Happy Valley cross-betting outlet - and total bets of HK$1.526 billion, including the Jockey Challenge, were the highest on record, with the government receiving HK$174 million in duty for the day's action.

The only other popes to have formally quit were Benedict IX, who sold the papacy to his godfather in 1045, and Saint Celestine V, a hermit who relinquished the Vatican keys after just five months in 1294.
