The architect says his design for the People's Daily building in Beijing is intended to appear from above as the Chinese character for "people". From ground level, however, the 150-metre skyscraper looks like something else entirely. Internet users poked fun at the phallic design until censors spoiled the fun by blocking searches for the building on Weibo - but not before pictures were widely shared.

The Beijing-loyalist newspaper thought it had its scoop of the year with the news that President Xi Jinping had taken a taxi through downtown Beijing with a single security aide. However, faces at the paper were as red as its politics when Xinhua said that no such journey took place.
