Guangdong braced for flood danger

Guangdong authorities are on alert for another severe rainstorm in central and southern parts of the province amid fears of flooding. The provincial military command has already held meetings with other government departments to co-ordinate precautionary flood-mitigation measures at major dams. The province has been hit with three major rainstorms and four more are expected before the end of this month.

 

Hongkongers will be hoping their lucky numbers come up as the Jockey Club offers its biggest Dragonboat Festival Mark 6 jackpot. An estimated HK$70 million is up for grabs in the snowball draw ahead of tomorrow's holiday. The prize fund has been boosted by the fact that no ticket won the top prize in Saturday's draw.

 

Europe's mechanism for ailing out cash-strapped states comes under close scrutiny in Germany's highest court. The Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe hears arguments against Germany's contributions to the European Central Bank's bond-buying programme. The case is being brought by a group of academics and a left-wing political party. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble will give evidence.

 

The footballing stars of the Netherlands are in Beijing for a friendly against China's struggling national team. It's the second stop in a three-date Asian tour for a Dutch squad that includes the likes of Manchester United's Robin van Persie (pictured) and Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben. The Netherlands are handily placed to qualify for next year's World Cup in Brazil, unlike their hosts, who went out early in the qualifying stages.

 

A mini-film festival kicks off at the Grand Cinema in West Kowloon, showcasing the latest big-screen hits from Japan. The Hong Kong Japanese Film Showcase features six films including the medical-themed drama , the first fictional work in six years by director Masayuki Suo. It reunites the director and stars of the 1996 hit Screenings continue until June 26.

 

Facebook directors face their first shareholder meeting - with the proceedings to be broadcast live online. Facebook has had a rocky ride since going public last year as it struggled to overcome stalling revenue growth. Among the matters on the agenda will be compensation for the company's board of directors, including the company's whizz-kid founder Mark Zuckerberg (pictured).
