Rafael Nadal

The Spanish master completed his return from injury in glorious fashion, picking up his eighth French Open title at Roland Garros. Nadal only returned to the court in February after a seven-month lay-off, but overcame his fellow countryman David Ferrer in straight sets. Amazingly, Nadal has lost just one of his 60 singles matches on the Parisian clay.

Cyndi Lauper

It may be 30 years since her biggest hit Girls Just Want To Have Fun topped charts around the world, but the former pop star is still making music. The Broadway musical she scored, Kinky Boots, picked up six awards, including best score for Lauper's music, at the Tony awards in New York.

George Orwell

The British novelist may have been dead for 63 years, but readers around the world seem to have seen a fresh relevance in his work since news of US government surveillance via a program called Prism broke care of whistle-blower Edward Snowden. Sales of Orwell's dystopian fantasy Nineteen Eighty-Four shot up 7,000 per cent on Amazon after the leaks.
