Li Yuanchao on four-day visit to Pyongyang
Vice-president Li Yuanchao visits North Korea this week for Korean war commemorations following a period of strained relations. He will be the highest-ranking mainland official to visit since Kim Jong-un took over as leader of the impoverished state in December 2011. The four-day trip affirms a warming trend in relations.
 
Acrobatics and musical at carnival
A series of events are scheduled as part of the International Arts Carnival tomorrow and Saturday. First, a musical exploring environmental protection is being held at Hong Kong City Hall, Central. Second is an acrobatics show and martial arts display performed by the award-winning Hebei Acrobatic Troupe at Tuen Mun Town Hall; and Pilobolus Dance Theatre's show about a teenage girl's dream journey of discovery is at Sha Tin Town Hall.
 
Cubans celebrate Day of Rebellion
Cubans commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Moncada barracks attack which marked the start of the Cuban revolution, known today as Cuba's National Day of Rebellion. The attacks on the barracks were carried out on July 26, 1953, by some 160 men and women led by Fidel Castro and Abel Santamaria. The actions failed, with dozens of the rebels murdered and jailed after being tortured. 
 
Forum on cultural leadership
The British Council and the University of Hong Kong hold a one-day public forum on Cultural Leadership: The Asian Way? at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Hall, Asia Society Hong Kong Centre. A range of local and international speakers will discuss whether the cultural sector in Asia has a role to play in today's world. Cultural leaders will explore how the value of culture is perceived in Asia, what the immediate challenges are for the cultural sector and how leadership can be nurtured locally.
 
Mick can't get no younger
Mick Jagger, the living legend of rock 'n' roll, turns 70 tomorrow. When still a much younger man, he once said: "I'd rather be dead than singing Satisfaction when I'm 45." Nevertheless, he just belted out the Rolling Stones' 1965 hit as the final encore at a concert in London's Hyde Park on July 13. Born Michael Philip Jagger, the London School of Economics dropout has been fronting the Rolling Stones as the band's lead singer since the group's founding in 1962. As part of the Stones' current "50 & Counting" tour, he and his long-time bandmates just finished a series of UK concerts.
 
Special meeting on waste recycling
The Legislative Council Panel on environmental affairs is holding a special session with administrative staff and deputations on issues relating to the city's municipal solid waste recycling rate and the handling of imported waste.
