Senior police officers brief the media on Hong Kong's crime situation in the first half of the year. Crime statistics for the first quarter, released in May, revealed an overall drop in the level of crime, although drug seizures and the circulation of fake credit cards and yuan notes in circulation were on the increase. There were also a larger number of homicide and rape cases reported.

The deadline arrives for a Chinese consortium to obtain the regulatory approvals it needs to buy the aircraft-leasing operation of American International Group. AIG has revived plans for a float of the leasing unit since the original deadline for the deal with Jumbo Acquisition expired almost two months ago. Jumbo agreed a US$4.23 billion deal for the firm in December.

The head of the US intelligence agency at the centre of a series of leaks by whistle-blower Edward Snowden gives a rare public speech at a gathering of information security experts. General Keith Alexander, head of the National Security Agency, is the keynote speaker at the Black Hat 2013 gathering at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, in an appearance confirmed by the organisers before Snowden fled to Hong Kong to leak NSA secrets.
