Meteorological Bureau discusses heat wave
The China Meteorological Bureau offers new details on the heat wave sweeping large swathes of the mainland when it briefs the press. The regular monthly press conference will also discuss rainstorms that have afflicted Sichuan . The record high temperatures have resulted in at least 10 deaths in Shanghai alone and many cities and counties have recorded daily maximum temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or more.
 
US jobs and factory data due
A slew of data from the United States reveals the latest picture on the US economic recovery. The Labour Department releases employment data for last month, with personal income and spending, and factory orders figures for June expected from the Commerce Department. The ADP National Employment Report, released yesterday, suggested that the US economy might have added 200,000 jobs last month.
 
Dell buyout due to go to vote
Dell shareholders will finally get the chance to vote on a takeover bid from the company's founder, Michael Dell - barring any further last-minute twists in the bidding saga. The company's special committee looking into the takeover rejected a request from Dell last week for the voting rules to be changed, so absent voters would no long count as "no" votes, in return for an extra 10 cents on the US$13.65 per share offer price.
 
Two sites put up for tender
Two residential sites, in Kau To, Sha Tin, and in Wan Chai, are put up for tender by the Lands Department. The Sha Tin site could yield a total gross floor area of 349,550 square feet, and the Wan Chai site could yield 11,195 sq ft. Tenders on the two sites close on September 13 as the government seeks to bring more flats onto the market to tackle low availability and high home prices.
 
City announces maths games plan
More details are revealed of Hong Kong's plans for the world championships of the mathematics world. The city won the right to serve as venue for the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2016, a competition that brings together the cream of the world's secondary school-age mathematicians. The competition last came to Hong Kong in 1994.
 
90 up for Shimon Peres
The elder statesman of Israeli politics, President Shimon Peres, celebrates his 90th birthday. Described by former US leader Bill Clinton as "the world's social Einstein" for his attempts to "put together a unified theory of meaning", Peres has for decades been at the centre of efforts to bring peace to Israel and its Arab neighbours. He has served as president since 2007 after being prime minister on three separate occasions.
