Retired police officers are planning to head for the ICAC headquarters in North Point today to complain about some lawmakers accepting a Cathay Pacific junket trip to France. The freebie has prompted criticism about a potential conflict of interest over Cathay's stand on an extra runway at Hong Kong's airport and opposition to a potential rival's bid for an air operator's licence. Executive councillor Cheng Yiu-tong and lawmaker Ip Kwok-him say they won't donate the trip costs.

 

After a record high of 139 new HIV cases in the first three months of this year, officials will be casting an anxious look at the second quarter figures for Hong Kong to be released today. The first quarter figures - a 14 per cent rise on the same period last year - were the highest since the city's first HIV case was diagnosed in 1984 and the second-highest quarterly figures after the record 140 cases in the third quarter last year.
