Mohamed Nasheed

The Maldives presidential election is in doubt with a new voter registry not ready because of objections from challengers to the country's first democratically elected leader. The Indian Ocean archipelago of holiday islands has been in turmoil since February last year when Mohamed Nasheed, who won the Maldives' first free elections in 2008, was ousted in what his supporters called a coup. Nasheed looked set to win a run-off vote on September 28, after coming first in the first round, but the Supreme Court called it off, citing first-round fraud.

Hundreds of Sai Kung residents are expected to turn out and join environmental activists at a town hall public forum to air their opposition to housing developments in the country park. The gathering comes as conservation officials plan to include five enclaves into Plover Cove Country Park, preventing the development plans of indigenous villagers.
