With Operation Santa, spirit of giving comes to Hong Kong
Christmas never comes too early. Just when the mercury begins to dip, our city eagerly gears up for the festive season. The skyline is clad with glittering lights and decorations; sleigh bells ring from a distance. Operation Santa Claus is coming to town.

No other charity captures the Christmas spirit like ours. Started in the 60s by some radio programme hosts, it is now a signature event jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK. For a quarter of a century, the campaign has borne witness to the love and generosity that define Hong Kong as a community. Rain or shine, our people are always willing to give. A record HK$18.8 million was raised at its silver anniversary celebration last year. Over the years, donations have totalled HK$188 million, benefiting 176 projects. It is truly a tradition to be proud of.
Another 18 beneficiaries have been selected this year, covering services for the elderly, disabled, children and low-income families. For instance, 160 underprivileged children aged two to five are to enjoy various learning activities that will stimulate their cognitive and social development. The charity drive is not just confined to the city. Part of the donations will go to the reconstruction programme for 65 homes damaged in the Sichuan earthquake in April.
The campaign is also fun for those who give. Apart from "Santa on the Beach", other highlights include a photo contest in which schools compete to capture the largest number of people wearing Santa hats in a single picture. A race through MTR stations within eight hours is another challenge.
The magic of Christmas works through helping people who are less fortunate than we are. It is the season for hoping, caring and loving. Hong Kong has a well-deserved reputation for being a charitable society. As we celebrate the festive season, let's carry on with this fine tradition and share the warmth and happiness by contributing to a meaningful cause. Your participation makes a difference.
