The retrial of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak resumes today over his alleged complicity in killing peaceful protesters during the January to February 2011 uprising that deposed him. Mubarak's co-defendants include his two sons, Alaa and Gama, former interior minister Habib el-Adly, and six former top police officials. The ousted dictator, who remains under house arrest in a military hospital in Cairo has seen his retrial postponed several times since he was released from prison in August. The 85-year-old, who was estimated to have a net worth of as much as US$70 billion at the height of his power, is expected to plead not guilty.
Philatelists will be out in force in the city today as rare stamps from mainland China and the earliest known letter mailed from Hong Kong are auctioned at the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay. The collection of stamps and postal artefacts for sale includes important Qing dynasty and Republic of China rarities, and Hong Kong and treaty ports stamps from the 19th century, featuring Queen Victoria. The auction runs until Monday.
