The tiny 47-year-old Filipino domestic helper with a booming voice was voted into the final five of The X Factor Israel, becoming a national sensation in the process. Known simply as "Rose", she is mobbed by fans wherever she goes. Fostanes arrived in Israel six years ago to work as a helper so she could send money back home to her family and her girlfriend. "It's a big change in my life because before, nobody knew me. But now everybody in Israel knows my name," she said.
Hong Kong-based employees of Asian financial companies could enjoy a better bonus season this year than their peers at Western banks. Executives at the Hong Kong offices of several mainland firms said they had received year-end bonuses that doubled their salary. Many expect a further payout in the first quarter as part of their bonus for last year. Asian banks are expected to give many of their staff in Hong Kong a bonus equal to five or six months of their salaries on average, according to industry sources.
Gay activist 'T'
The Court of Appeal on Wednesday upheld a gay activist's right to dance during a 2011 rally. The judgment agreed with a ruling in July last year in favour of the activist, identified in court only as "T". The activist's lawyer said the court's decision would prevent the police misusing their power to stop people from demonstrating, particularly members of the Occupy Central movement.
