Spectacular space drama  leads the way with 11 nominations for tomorrow's British Academy Film Awards (Baftas) but the harrowing is tipped to win the top honours at the last major awards ceremony before the Oscars. Hollywood stars are due to pack out the Royal Opera House in London for the glitzy red-carpet event, attended by Prince William and hosted for a ninth time by actor Stephen Fry. In Berlin, the awards ceremony for the 64th Berlinale festival is being held tonight.

 

About 73,000 runners will line up for tomorrow's Hong Kong Marathon that will see routes in northern Hong Kong Island and western Kowloon closed off in phases from late tonight. Some 36,500 participants will run in the 10km race with a similar number of runners lining up for the combined half and full marathons. An 800-strong medical care team will be on hand for emergencies.

 

The Independent Commission Against Corruption will open the doors of its North Point headquarters to mark the watchdog's 40th anniversary. Inside the high-security ICAC building in Java Road, visitors will for the first time see the showpiece exhibit: the personal logbooks of jailed former police chief superintendent Peter Fitzroy Godber, whose crimes became the catalyst for the establishment of the anti-graft body in 1974.

 

Amid the cold snap lingering over Hong Kong, some 50 amateur long-distance swimmers will brave the chilly waters at Stanley Beach for the start of the second annual Cold Half Extreme Marathon Swim. Competitors are geared for the 14-kilometre, five-hour swim around Tai Tam Tau to the north side of Middle Island. Organisers say the temperature will be warmer under water, at around 16 degrees, than in the open air.

 

Jazz guitar virtuoso Larry Carlton returns to Hong Kong for a concert with his trio - which includes his son Travis on bass - at the Academic Community Hall, Kowloon Tong, tomorrow. A former member of The Crusaders and four-time Grammy winner, Carlton, 66, has recorded with a diverse range or artists including Joni Mitchell and Michael Jackson. He also played the brilliant solo on Steely Dan's 1976 track .

 

Apple will open its first retail store in Brazil today, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro's famous Barra da Tijuca borough. The computer giant will use temporary technical and sales staff from the United States to train local workers and get the store fully operational before the Fifa World Cup opens in Rio in June.
