Exchanging insults in realm of fantasy

The war of words between Japan and China has resumed as tensions in the East and South China Seas heat up again.

Tokyo yesterday compared China to Mordor in the Lord of the Rings. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the way President Xi Jinping looked at people certainly reminded him of the great evil eye of Sauron. He also points out the resemblance between the seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee with the Nazgul or the ringwraith - the powerful servants of Sauron.

"Even their slogans are same: One ring [party] to rule them all," Abe told the South China Morning Post in an exclusive interview.

Meanwhile, not content with sitting on the sideline while his neighbours insulted each other with references from fantasy books, Philippines President Benigno Aquino joined the fray, saying Chinese leaders behaved like the House of Lannister in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones.

"They are filthy rich but they still want more," he said. "Beijing's motto is exactly the same as the House of Lannister: Hear Me Roar!" Xi has called China an "awakened lion".

The Philippines has filed a case in the UN arbitration tribunal challenging Beijing's claim to most of the South China Sea after a dramatic stand-off with China's coastguard. This was despite Chinese warnings of a fallout in bilateral relations.

Beijing hit back last night, comparing Aquino with the house slave master Stephen in Django Unchained. "He is a good head of the servants, but a slave nevertheless," a foreign ministry spokesman said. He also likened Abe to Loki in the movie Thor. "If Loki wants war, we will give him war. Chinese people are like Hulk, the angrier we get, the stronger we are," he said.

Professor Joe Blowater, a specialist in Asia studies at the University of Hong Kong, urged Asian leaders to act like adults and read fewer fantasy books.

"They should stop reading comics and watching bootlegged Hollywood DVDs," he said, adding that quality reading was important to statesmanship.

"A better knowledge of the classics would not be amiss.

"Say Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Fifty Shades of Grey. It's all about domination, right?"

It is wonderful to see commenters so stupid that they will use even an April Fool's joke as an excuse for racism and nationalism.

I think it's because they don't practice April Fools Day in the mainland.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is an uncouth rabid thug that behaves and talk like his war-criminal grand father. Most Japanese see that as having bad DNA. This is a dead end evolution. Even South Korea's president Park finds this mongrel dishonourable MF too disgusting. God will bless these Japanese devils a few more Fukushimas and have them join their evil ancestors at the Yasukuni War Shrine.
Erm....April FOOL. (It's even spelled out for you at the end of the Article.)
On this April day
Mr Lo has become Mr Wan
Let’s hear Chris De Burgh instead
There once was a king, who called for the spring,
For his world was still covered with snow,
But the spring had not been, for he was wicked and mean,
In his winter fields nothing would grow;
And when a traveller called, seeking help at the door,
Only food and a bed for a night,
He ordered his slave to turn her away,
The girl with april in her eyes...
Thanks and no thanks
Oh my God! Alex is very wicked indeed!
I wonder this Sino-Japanese relationship works especially given that Japan is also helping out with the MH370 aircraft loss.
Very good! I fell for it until the Fifty Shades of Grey reference.
Wan Lo-chan ?
Whose joke is this,
yours or your parents'?
Abe like most Jxxs -expect other world leaders to smile and bowl and be polite - but than Pearl Harbour them from behind. Jxxs talk of peace , but are the ones that wage war. They talk of others being a threat and aggressor but are themselves the terror.
This seems to be a follow up by AL after he wrote earlier how people in Asia so much in love with Hello Kitty that more fantasies outlook from comics and popular movies are applied in daily life. Even leaders can’t escape them. Are Asians more impulsive when emotions are aroused? Rational minds are in short supply at time most critically required.
Speak for yourself.
To blue,
Your sentiment is noted. I still stand by my observation.
Very funny. Yet not that far from the truth, unfortunately!
