Chief secretary talks democracy at HKU
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor speaks at the University of Hong Kong convocation on universal suffrage. She will focus on the recent consultation on the election of the chief executive in 2017 and controversy over the issue, in particular calls by pan-democrats for civil nomination. Separately, pan-democrat Charles Mok will host a discussion on political reform ahead of a three-day civil referendum on the nomination system starting on Friday.
 
Legislators present views on fuel mix
Representatives of the New People's Party and Civil Force hold a news conference to present their views on the future fuel mix for producing electricity in Hong Kong. A government consultation exercise on the issue closed yesterday. Officials presented two options: increasing power supply from the mainland and tripling gas-fired local generation. The government prefers the first option, while business tends to back the second.
 
Environment chief visits restored landfills
Environment Secretary Wong Kam-sing and members of a new steering committee visit restored landfills to see how these sites have been revitalised. Seven out of 13 landfills have been restored, mainly for recreational purposes. The government has allocated HK$1 billion under the restored landfill revitalisation funding scheme to allow non-profit organisations and sports associations to develop the sites.
 
New Spanish king to be sworn in
Barring unforeseen hitches, Prince Felipe becomes Spain's new king, following the abdication of his father earlier this month. A joint session of parliament will make the proclamation, which will be followed by a swearing-in ceremony and an address by the new king. Felipe's father, Juan Carlos, became king in 1975 when dictator Francisco Franco reinstated the monarchy.
 
Hong Kong hosts Transformers premiere
Hong Kong hosts the world premiere of the film Transformers: Age of Extinction. The great and the good descend on the Cultural Centre for the premiere. On the red carpet will be director Michael Bay as well as stars Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz. The film was largely shot in Hong Kong, but Bay faced problems when some locals tried to extort money from him for filming in their neighbourhood.
 
J.K. Rowling publishes crime novel
The creator of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, publishes her second novel in a crime series written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The Silkworm is the follow-up to last year's Galbraith premiere, Cuckoo's Calling, about detective Cormoran Strike. Rowling's cover was blown by a senior figure in a law firm which had represented her in the past.
