Today is the 110th anniversary of the birth of Deng Xiaoping. The government in Beijing is marking the 1904 birth of the founder of the country's reform programme with several events. A symposium was held on Wednesday at which President Xi Jinping made a renewed call for reform. Deng was also instrumental in creating "one country, two systems" for Hong Kong. He died in February 1997 - five months before Hong Kong returned to China.

 

Basic Law Committee chairman Li Fei meets various Hong Kong dignitaries in Shenzhen to discuss the 2017 election of the chief executive. This is the second day of consultations held by Li following yesterday's meetings with lawmakers. The discussions come ahead of next week's session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, which will set the framework for the 2017 poll.

 

Legislative councillors hold a special meeting to discuss government measures to prevent and control the Ebola virus. Officials came under fire over their handling of a suspected case involving a Nigerian man after medical workers failed to wear full protective gear. Health Secretary Ko Wing-man is attending the Legco meeting. The Nigerian man tested negative for Ebola, which has hit four West African countries.

 

The American Chamber of Commerce presents a discussion on the financial and services centre being set up in Qianhai, Shenzhen. The speakers are the zone's head of business promotion, Peter Tao Peng, and KPMG senior partner Peter Kung. They examine the benefits Hong Kong firms can gain from setting up in the zone, which was created in 2010 to encourage Hong Kong-mainland collaboration.

 

Malaysia observes a day of national mourning for victims of MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine. The remains of 15 Malaysians and a Dutch national who lost their lives in the tragedy arrive at Kuala Lumpur airport from Amsterdam. The family of the Dutch national asked for the victim to be buried in Malaysia. The ceremony to remember those killed is being held at the international airport. A total of 43 Malaysians died in the crash.

 

The British Broadcasting Corporation celebrates 50 years of its well-known soccer programme . The first show was aired on 22 August 22, 1964. It covered Liverpool's game against Arsenal at Anfield. The game was shown in black and white and was viewed by around 20,000 people. Those audience figures have since shot up, with the show now expected to attract about four million people.
