Focus on women at Tokyo summit
The Japanese government hosts the World Assembly for Women in Tokyo. Among keynote speakers are Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde. Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton will send a video message. The event will review the role of women in Japan's growth strategy, as well as in development worldwide. The conference comes shortly after Abe appointed five women to his new-look cabinet.
 
Human rights lawyer to be tried
The trial of Chinese human rights lawyer Yang Maodong is scheduled to be held in Guangzhou. The lawyer, who is better known under his pseudonym Guo Feixiong, faces charges of "gathering a crowd to disrupt social order" after he pressed Beijing to sign a UN human rights treaty. Fellow rights activist Sun Desheng will stand trial on the same charges. Yang plans to fight the charges, but he is expected to be convicted.
 
European Commission chief visits Kiev
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso travels to Kiev to discuss the crisis in Ukraine. The visit comes as a ceasefire between Ukrainian separatists and government forces holds - despite sporadic incidents - and the European Union threatens tougher sanctions against Russia for its role in the crisis. It is proposing sanctions against Russian conglomerate Rosneft and units of Gazprom.
 
WHO hosts press conference on Ebola
The World Health Organisation holds a press conference on the latest situation on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. About 2,000 people have died so far in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. Various companies are preparing experimental vaccines, although they will not be ready for several months. In another development, Cuba is expected to announce that it will send hundreds of health workers to help West African countries deal with the crisis.
 
Chief executive attends National Day event
Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying attends a National Day reception hosted by the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations. Also attending are former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa and liaison office director Zhang Xiaoming . Various activities are being held in the run-up to the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic, which takes place on October 1 - a public holiday.
 
Students discuss democracy class boycott
The students' union of the Hong Kong Institute of Education holds a conference to discuss a class boycott over Beijing's proposal for political reform. The boycott is set to start on September 22. Students are angry that the National People's Congress Standing Committee endorsed a restrictive framework for the 2017 chief executive poll.
