The Japanese government hosts the World Assembly for Women in Tokyo. Among keynote speakers are Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde. Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton will send a video message. The event will review the role of women in Japan's growth strategy, as well as in development worldwide. The conference comes shortly after Abe appointed five women to his new-look cabinet.
The trial of Chinese human rights lawyer Yang Maodong is scheduled to be held in Guangzhou. The lawyer, who is better known under his pseudonym Guo Feixiong, faces charges of "gathering a crowd to disrupt social order" after he pressed Beijing to sign a UN human rights treaty. Fellow rights activist Sun Desheng will stand trial on the same charges. Yang plans to fight the charges, but he is expected to be convicted.
