Kerry to join Iran nuclear talks
US Secretary of State John Kerry will join EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif for a trilateral meeting in Vienna on Tehran's nuclear energy programme. Top diplomats of the United States, Iran and the European Union are already in Vienna for the latest round of talks to push for an elusive deal between Iran and the world powers ahead of a November 24 deadline.
 
Key elections in Mozambique
Today's presidential, legislative and provincial elections in Mozambique will be closely watched especially by foreign investors, as the country stands on the cusp of reaping vast wealth from its nascent gas industry. Brawling has already occurred in the run-up to the polls between supporters of the ruling Frelimo party and opposition party Renamo. The three presidential candidates are Frelimo's Filipe Nyusi, Renamo's Afonso Dhlakama and Daviz Simango of the Mozambique Democracy Movement.
 
Vietnam's premier to outline issues facing Asia
Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, on a week-long European tour, is due to speaks in Berlin on the subject of the foreign and security challenges facing Asia. It is hoped the trip will lead to trade and investment deals between the two countries. Talks in Belgium earlier this week were aimed at increasing bilateral cooperation in areas such as logistics and technology.
 
Trial opens of Nigerian troops accused of mutiny
The trial begins of 97 Nigerian Army officers and soldiers accused of mutiny, assault and defiance of authority. They are thought to have refused to fight members of the militant group Boko Haram in the northeast of the country. Twelve other soldiers were sentenced to death on September 15 for mutiny.
 
Poll will test Modi's appeal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spearheaded his Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign for today's elections in Maharashtra state, knows that victory in the home of India's financial hub Mumbai will make it easier to push through economic reforms. The smaller northern state of Haryana also votes today. But it is the western state of Maharashtra that will provide the best test of how well Modi's appeal is holding up, five months after he came to power. Local polls predict the BJP will win, but perhaps only with a narrow margin.
