What the Mainland Media Say | Rich couple's donation criticised, but Chinese lag in cross-border philanthropy
A wealthy couple's donation to Yale draws criticism, while Hong Kong leads the world in showing generosity beyond its borders

Billionaire couple Pan Shiyi and Zhang Xin have once again ignited controversy with the announcement last week of a planned donation to another prestigious university in the United States.
Their gift of US$10 million to Yale University prompted an outcry from Chinese internet users, with some questioning why the rich duo chose to donate to an overseas university instead of to underprivileged students at home.
The endowment is part of the couple's US$100 million initiative to fund disadvantaged Chinese students at top institutions across the globe.
In July, the couple also gave Harvard University US$15 million, resulting in a debate over national loyalties.
"They made money in China but donate to foreign nations," one microblogger said.
"What about all the poor children in mountainous areas?" asked another.
But state-run media appeared to be more positive about the development. The Beijing Morning Post said the public should adopt a "correct attitude" towards donations to other countries. China Daily said philanthropy should not be restricted by borders and the big gifts add to China's soft power.
