Xi Jinping visits New Zealand
New Zealand welcomes President Xi Jinping for an official visit. This is the first visit of a Chinese president since Hu Jintao made the trip in 2003. Xi is scheduled to visit both Auckland and Wellington. He will meet New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and other officials in a bid to boost cooperation between the two countries. Xi was previously in Australia to attend the G20 summit. He also addressed the Australian parliament.
 
Internet leaders attend China summit
Leading lights of China's online revolution are set to attend the World Internet Conference, which starts today in the historic town of Wuzhen in Zhejiang province. They include Alibaba chairman Jack Ma Yun and Baidu founder Robin Li. The conference will discuss global internet governance, cybersecurity, the role of the internet in promoting economic and social development and technological innovation in the field.
 
Indian, US officials hold security dialogue
The regular US-India Strategic Security Dialogue gets under way in New Delhi. The sessions will be co-chaired by Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh and US Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller. The US undersecretary will also meet other Indian officials to discuss international security issues. The US considers India to be an important ally in Asia.
 
Legco debates motion over CY payment
Hong Kong lawmakers debate a motion on whether to set up a select committee to investigate the payment of £4 million (HK$48.6 million) to Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying by Australian company UGC, which took over DTZ, of which Leung was a director. The motion is being put forward by Labour Party lawmaker Cyd Ho Sau-lan, who is concerned about whether Leung declared his holdings in DTZ properly. The motion is likely to be voted down.
 
Hong Kong Television goes live
The television newcomer launches its online entertainment and shopping channels today. Chairman Ricky Wong Wai-kay will figure prominently at a launch ceremony. Wong initially applied for a free-to-air television licence but was rejected in favour of two other applicants. He then faced a further obstacle when his bid to launch a mobile service was rejected on technical grounds.
 
Jane Goodall speaks in Hong Kong
Frequent Hong Kong visitor Jane Goodall speaks at the British Council about her life story. Described as "the woman who redefined man", she will share how she followed and realised her childhood dream of studying animals in Africa, her pioneering research in Tanzania and her transformation from scientist to activist.
