The retail sales figures for October are released. These are the first figures reflecting whether the Occupy movement has had an impact on shopping habits, in particular in popular locations such as Causeway Bay and Mong Kok - sites which have been occupied. The September figures showed a 4.8 per cent rise in sales on the back of the launch of the iPhone 6. Retail Management Association chairwoman Caroline Mak Sui-king gives her reaction to the October figures.

 

Leading business representatives take part in a summit on economic prospects for next year. They will discuss in particular the likely impact of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect, which was launched last month. Speakers include Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, Monetary Authority chief executive Norman Chan Tak-lam and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing head Charles Li Xiaojia.

 

Secretary for Food and Health Ko Wing-man attends an exercise simulating a quarantine exercise for Ebola victims. It is being held in Lei Yue Mun Park, which was used as a confinement centre during the Sars outbreak in 2003. The exercise focuses on handling those who are confined and procedures for removing health workers' protective clothing. Nearly 7,000 people have died in the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

 

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha visits Malaysia. He will meet his Malaysian counterpart, Najib Razak, during the one-day visit. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to end violence in southern Thailand, which has long been plagued by a separatist Muslim movement in regions bordering Malaysia. Prayuth will also visit South Korea and Japan later this month.

 

Former Polish premier Donald Tusk becomes the new president of the European Council. He takes over from Herman van Rompuy, who held the post for five years. Tusk is joined by former Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini as the EU's foreign affairs chief. She took over from Catherine Ashton. Tusk will have to face issues such as reviving the European economy and dealing with a resurgent Russia.

 

The world's largest climate conference of the year is held in the Peruvian capital of Lima. The 12-day session allows parties to the Kyoto Protocol to take stock of the measures they have agreed to curb carbon emissions, with an overall goal of limiting global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius above current levels. Participants will also work on a new draft global deal on carbon emissions ahead of a summit in Paris to be held late next year.
