The Taiwanese president stepped down from his position as chairman of the ruling Kuomintang after the party suffered a humiliating defeat in local elections. The KMT was only able to capture five of 16 cities and counties and one of six municipalities, down from the 15 it held after the previous elections. The defeats also led to Premier Dr Jiang Yi-huah and 81 members of his cabinet resigning. "I must apologise to all our supporters … and take full responsibility for such a defeat," Ma said.
