Hong Kong’s generosity never ceases to amaze

Even in these troubled times, the community can be counted on to support worthy causes such as Operation Santa Claus

Overwhelmed by a series of political shock waves in Hong Kong and overseas over the past weeks, the public mood in Hong Kong is understandably downbeat. As we ponder what lies ahead, it is important that we not give up hope in the future and be ready to play a part to make the world a better place for all. Helping others in need is a start. It is with that spirit that Operation Santa Claus is launched every year. Co-organised by the South China Morning Post and the public broadcaster Radio Television Hong Kong since 1988, the charity drive has gone from strength to strength. It ties with the festive season characterised by love, joy and, above all, the spirit of giving that we too often take for granted nowadays. Thanks to the efforts of those involved, a record-breaking HK$21.3 million was raised last year for a variety of meaningful programmes.

What sets it apart from other fundraising campaigns is that there are clear beneficiaries from a broad spectrum of social services, the details of which can be found on the dedicated website osc.scmp.com. To enhance accountability, there are daily news reports focusing on the real benefits that will be brought to people in the following year. A raft of new projects has been included to support the city’s youth this year, including the Outward Bound Trust of Hong Kong and the FHL Adventure Education Centre.

More than HK$250 million for 237 charitable causes has been raised over the past three decades. Remarkable as it is, the campaign would not have been a success without the help of innumerable donors. Come rain or shine, they live out the spirit of giving that defines Hong Kong’s vibrant culture of charity. They help nourish a civic duty of aiding those in need.

With so many disputes and worries to deal with everyday, it is easy to forget that there are people who are less fortunate than we are. We stay united as a community through care and generosity. Like the operation’s theme, “Small Change, Big Change”, every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference.
