We can all remember our university days - the enduring friendships made during long nights studying and cramming for tests.

As the first semester comes to an end, students in universities across Hong Kong face immense pressure to excel in their exams.

Although stress can often help bring out the best in students, it can sometimes lead to bad choices as they struggle to cope with the pressure. Such choices include a range of activities, but one harmful option is binge drinking.

Alcohol consumption in Hong Kong is on the decline. According to the Department of Health, the percentage of Hong Kong citizens who consume alcohol fell from 37 per cent in 2007 to 30 per cent in 2012. Binge drinking levels, among all citizens including students, have also declined during this period, falling from 9 per cent in 2007 to 6 per cent in 2012.

Studies have also shown that Hong Kong students demonstrate significantly lower rates of binge drinking than their global counterparts; nevertheless, the city must work to maintain a healthy rate of alcohol consumption and ensure Hong Kong's young adults understand the importance of responsible drinking.
