Local history education in schools is inadequate. Students are not able to have a real understanding of the past of our city.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness among youngsters about issues affecting Hong Kong, for example, the problems connected with mainland tourists behaving badly.
The umbrella movement helped young people to feel a better sense of belonging as Hongkongers, as it resulted in many of them calling for a more democratic political system.
I think they can have an even deeper sense of belonging by learning more about Hong Kong's history, rather than merely being concerned with its politics.
Many students and parents regard local history as a useless subject nowadays and do not study it.
This means they have little understanding of the past and some of the most important events in our history, such as the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941.
