It has become a routine that every time our top government officials speak on social matters, they shoot themselves in the foot for being so obviously out of touch with the reality of everyday life of most people in Hong Kong.
The most recent example of this came from Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah, about flats being unaffordable for so many people ("Can't afford a flat? Then don't buy it, says Tsang", March 1).
Not only is this statement arrogant, it is devoid of understanding of the predicament in Hong Kong of being priced out of a flat to live in.
It would likely be too much to expect that our top officials have a deeper understanding of real life most people here have to deal with, and a little compassion just may be in order.
As property prices continue to rise, it isn't as though rents are stagnant.
With rents continuing to go up, many Hongkongers find themselves in a bind and may see no option but to buy a flat in order to "stop the bleeding" of ever increasing rents.
