1. After the Storm

Hirokazu Koreeda has been staking his claim as one of the world’s greatest living auteurs in the past decade, and this low-key effort – a companion piece to his 2008 masterpiece Still Walking – retains its emotional resonance even with its ostensibly pulpy premise. (Opens on July 21)

2. Star Trek Beyond

Arriving like a breath of fresh air in this year of disappointing blockbuster sequels, the third instalment of the rebooted Star Trek series, directed by Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin, is a hugely entertaining entry that blends thrilling sci-fi action with progressive character settings. 3. Mary Poppins

With a sequel starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda in the works, it’s time to revisit the magical nanny in this subversively surreal adaptation of P. L. Travers’ book from 1964 – one of the most beloved children’s musicals of all time. (July 23, part of International Children’s Film Carnival)

4. Hentai Kamen 2: The Abnormal Crisis

The Japanese comic about superpowers and sexual perversions is again adapted by director Yuichi Fukuda into a jubilant follow-up to his 2013 film. Absurd and clearly not for family, the sequel even earns a few extra giggles with its references to 2004’s Spider-Man 2. (Opens on July 21)

Louis Koo Tin-lok, Wallace Chung Hon-leung and Zhao Wei give their best impression of restrained fury in Johnnie To Kei-fung’s slow-burning crime drama, which contemplates the shifting moral boundaries of Hong Kong professionals working in a dog-eat-dog society. (Now showing)
