In what’s shaping up as a banner year for South Korean cinema, the recent surge of interest in occupation-era period pieces continues unabated with Kim Jee-woon’s gripping espionage thriller, the country’s submission for the foreign language Oscar. (Opens on October 20)

A comedy based around its protagonist’s small stature is bound to appal some viewers, but this French romance – based on a 2013 Argentinean film – should win hearts for Jean Dujardin’s charming turn, as well as its delicate direction to avoid exploitation. (Opens on October 20)

The morally complex territory traversed by snipers receives another intriguing look in this Russian-Ukrainian co-production, which sees the sharpshooter Lyudmila Pavlichenko – with 309 confirmed kills – negotiate her frontline experiences with her personal life. (Opens on October 20)

Miwa Nishikawa is one of the best Japanese filmmakers of her generation, and this little-seen 2003 debut – revolving around the deceptions enveloping members of a middle-class family – is the dark comedy that announced her arrival. (October 24, part of Hong Kong Asian Film Festival)

Denzel Washington leads a killer cast of heroic outlaws in this possibly unnecessary, borderline simplistic, yet exhilarating remake of John Sturges’ iconic Western. Antoine Fuqua’s colour-blind entertainer is the best that the Hollywood action genre is offering. (Now showing)
