It’s all very reasonable to second guess the best picture Oscar win of a low-budget independent film – about a gay, black and impoverished protagonist – for being politically motivated. But anyone who’s seen Barry Jenkins’ profound coming-of-age drama would tell you it’s a deserved winner. (Now showing)

If this is indeed Hugh Jackman’s final outing as the aggrieved mutant Wolverine, as the actor clearly declared, his beloved X-Men character couldn’t have hoped for a better note to go out on than this surprisingly gory, uncompromisingly bleak send-off, with little regard for genre conventions. 5. The Girl with all the Gifts

It must be tough being a doomsayer of zombie film trends these days. This inventive thriller by Scottish director Colm McCarthy is just the latest to add a delirious twist to the once-tired apocalyptic formula, ironically pitching its young “hungries” as the last hope of survival for humans.
