I Am Not Madame Bovary wins best picture at Asian Film Awards; The Handmaiden takes home four prizes
Chinese director Feng Xiaogang’s social satire also earns awards including best actress for Fan Bingbing, while Harmonium’s Tadanobu Asano wins best actor; Lam Suet Hong Kong’s only major winner, for best supporting actor
Chinese director Feng Xiaogang’s I Am Not Madame Bovary was named best picture at the 11th Asian Film Awards, announced at a star-studded ceremony in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on Tuesday. The social satire, starring Fan Bingbing as a provincial woman who single-handedly takes on China’s labyrinthine bureaucracy, also won best actress for Fan and best cinematographer for Luo Pan.
Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano won best actor for his part in Harmonium, after taking home the best supporting actor prize for Journey to the Shore last year. The best director award went to South Korean director Na Hong-jin for his supernatural horror mystery The Wailing .
Park Chan-wook’s erotic thriller The Handmaiden won four awards, including best supporting actress, best newcomer, best production design and best costume designer.
The Asian Film Awards, founded in Hong Kong in 2007, had been hosted by Macau in the past few years, and its return to this city was seemingly celebrated with frequent shout-outs to Hong Kong cinema throughout the ceremony.
Veteran actor Lam Suet, a regular face in Johnnie To-produced films, was the only local winner in a competitive category, winning best supporting actor for Trivisa .
