After appearing in films by esteemed directors such as Whit Stillman, Todd Solondz and Noah Baumbach, Gerta Gerwig announces her arrival as a directing talent to watch with her Oscar-nominated debut, starring Saoirse Ronan as a disgruntled high-schooler dreaming of a better life. A powerful tale of grief, alienation and identity by Chilean director Sebastian Lelio, this front-runner for the best foreign language Oscar follows a transgender woman (Daniela Vega, indelible) who struggles against prejudice from every side to move on after the death of her partner. 3. Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny

From the Gen-X classic Slacker to the early studio hit Dazed and Confused, and from mainstream comedy School of Rock to the monumental Before Sunrise trilogy and Boyhood, this documentary portrait of Richard Linklater has every stage of the filmmaker’s career covered. 4. Back to Burgundy

In this quietly sentimental drama by Cedric Klapisch, three siblings reunite after a decade apart to inherit their family’s vineyard in Burgundy. Even if the personal dilemmas facing its characters do not always intrigue, the film’s picturesque setting in the world of French wines certainly does. (Opens on February 22)

5. Movie Movie Festival: Countdown to the Awards

For audiences eager to sample as many Oscar nominees on the big screen as they could before the winners are announced, this two-day screening programme – covering major contenders such as Get Out , Call Me by Your Name and Phantom Thread – represents an unmissable opportunity. (February 24 and 25)
