Leonard Cohen, the Canadian-born poet, songwriter and singer whose death was announced yesterday, never had a song in the American top 40, but his influential songs were recorded by performers as disparate as Nina Simone, R.E.M. and Johnny Cash. He was recording right up until the end – his final studio album was released last month.
