As of June 11, there had been 1,288 known cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) resulting in 498 deaths. The crisis began in South Korea when a man carrying the disease returned from the Middle East on May 11. To date, 145 people in South Korea have been hospitalised and 15 have died. An infected person transited through Hong Kong on May 26. This triggered quarantines and a cross-border manhunt in his wake, recalling painful memories of the Sars outbreak that left 299 dead in Hong Kong 12 years ago.
