Celebrities lead the way in knitting for children in need
When it comes to charity, Malaysian-Chinese singer-songwriter Gary Chaw is happy to pick up the knitting needles - even if he's clumsy with them.
Chaw, also known as Cao Ge, was at Kowloon Tong's Festival Walk mall on Wednesday to help launch Save the Children's annual "Knit One, Save One" campaign.
Shoppers can buy a knitting kit for HK$100, comprising a ball of yarn, knitting needles and instructions. Caps knitted will be given to Nepali children to stave off the cold, and proceeds from sale of the kits will be donated to underprivileged children worldwide.
Chaw, a father of two, said it was important to let children know they are cherished.
"I always hug them, give them warmth and let them know that I love them," he said. "There are so many children in the world who need love. A little contribution from us makes a big impact."
Actress Karena Lam Ka-yan was also at the event. She said her greatest wish she was for her child - and all children - to be healthy. "I get so worried that I can't sleep when my daughter is ill," she said. "Knitting a cap takes patience. But for children in need, I have plenty of that."
Lam said she would put up a real Christmas tree now that her daughter was old enough to appreciate it. Chaw said he was happy he would be in Malaysia to celebrate the holiday with his family this year.
