Karen Mok's debut jazz album: Somewhere I Belong
The wait is finally over. Singer-actress Karen Mok Man-wai's first jazz album titled is finally coming out on Friday next week (January 18).
"This is jazz music but with a touch of Chinese-ness," she said.
Mok has reinterpreted several tunes including Beatles' classic for the new album, and in the music video, she shows off her gu zheng prowess.
"I don't know how to play guitar but what I do know is playing gu zheng. So I thought, why not do it in my own way," she said.
"I'm used to being different and I think that's what made things interesting for me. I don't want to follow in anyone's footsteps.
The music video was directed by famous British photographer/director Simon Fowler who previously worked with singers such as Sarah Brightman, Kylie Minogue and Enya. Mok flew to London especially for the filming.
The album however was recorded in a traditional studio in Shanghai where jazz culture prospered in the 1930s.
"Jazz is a type of music that crosses the boundary of borders and different cultures," she said.
