Hong Kong Fashion Week: Ika Butoni

Hong Kong-based fashion designer Ika Butoni is well known for her ultra-modern sensibility, which she couples with indigenous craftsmanship and folk details from her native Indonesia.

She is also known for her edgy fashion shows, so her autumn-winter collection had been eagerly awaited.

Ika unveiled the collection, 'Autumn Breeze', at Wan Chai's Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday. She presented it in conjunction with shows from up-and-coming Norwegian designer Espen Salberg and luxury India-based cashmere, silk and knitwear brand Pashma.

Afterwards, Ika, her chunky Balinese jewellery glinting in the light, was her usual serene self - although she found it hard to hide her excitement at the show's success. Last year she drew her inspiration from Africa, but this year felt something softer, more accessible fit the changing face of her brand: "Autumn Breeze was suitable because I had to do something that was more commercial. In the past I didn't have to think about commercialism, I just did what I liked."

Her growing commercial focus and success led to the opening of her first Hong Kong store last year, at The Mira hotel.
