Lionel Estève's show opens in Central
The art season is already in full swing and diaries are filling up with exhibition openings. Much anticipated on Friday were two shows - "He's an interesting thinker" by John Henderson and "To the Rain" by Lionel Estève - at Galerie Perrotin in Central.
Henderson presented a series of abstract metallic cast paintings, and a second series of manipulated photographs. Estève, meanwhile, filled rooms of the sizable gallery with colour. In one room, large framed works made of brightly coloured paint samples filled the walls.
In another, diaphanous brightly coloured curtains were hung up, tempting visitors to walk through them. In front sat a collection of stones, painted in myriad colours halfway up their sides, as if a literal flood of colour had just receded.
In his artist statement, Estève said his exhibition was inspired by landscape and he intended his works to be illustrations of the theory of parallel worlds.
Judging from the smiles and wide eyes of visitors to the gallery, it seems the explanation he gave in person on the night was what really resonated with his audience: "I just want people surrounded by colour, surrounded by something sweet."
