Affordable Art for all in Hong Kong

The way things are going it seems that art fairs could soon outnumber 7-Elevens in Hong Kong. So, it is quite a feat when a new fair manages to capture the attention of the buying public.

If the cocktail party launch at The Cat Street Gallery on Tuesday is anything to go on, the Affordable Art Fair managed it.

Originally planned for The Space, before a power outage forced everyone over to The Cat Street Gallery, the evening saw artists and art lovers mingling over canapés while Camilla Hewitson, the fair's director in both Singapore and Hong Kong, held court and explained the fair's vision.

"In Hong Kong, what we're really excited about is having the opportunity to bring 80 galleries together under one roof. Sixty per cent of the galleries will be from Asia; 40 per cent from America, Europe and Australia. You've actually got more galleries coming to Hong Kong than you did coming to Singapore."

This being the art world, the notion of affordable is relative. Pieces will range from between HK$1,000 and HK$100,000. Still, the comparatively lower price tag should be a boon to aspiring collectors and younger artists.

"You'll see a lot of emerging artists because the galleries can populate their stands with some really young artists who perhaps they haven't tested the market with before."

She had some advice for new collectors: "Trust your eye. Trust your judgment. We live in a very visual world now, and we all have opinions."

The fair will take place from March 15 to 17.
