The winning shot from our #SoHongKong photo contest, by Aaron Anfinson @crop.circles

In pictures: #SoHongKong photo contest winners announced

See the photos that won our three top prizes and a selection of other entries in our contest to find images that sum up the city and its uniqueness: its skyline, natural beauty, quirky citizens and food

What makes Hong Kong unique? We threw the question out there, and from the flood of different responses that came in it soon became apparent that it depends who you ask. Many of you paid tribute to the city’s urban skyline, others to its natural beauty. Some of you shared images of favourite Hong Kong dishes, or captured ‘So Hong Kong’ moments, poking fun at the idiosyncrasies and quirkier side of the city and its people.

Summing it all up in one photo is a tall order, and your impressions of Hong Kong gain strength as a collective portrait. We’ve gathered a selection of our favourites here, and will run them as a collage in print on Monday, June 27. There were more worthy submissions than we could fit on one page, and we want to thank every one who participated.

We selected these three winners based on the votes of a small jury, made up of senior editorial staff from the SCMP photo desk, culture and digital departments.

Congratulations to Aaron Anfinson (on Instagram as @crop.circles) for winning a complimentary night’s stay at The Peninsula Hong Kong for his defining portrait (above) of a true Hong Kong character on a Saturday night in Mong Kok. “I was trying to capture how everything changes when the evening begins,” says Anfinson. “I really enjoy that moment when, after a long day, the cars are prohibited and people are free to roam the streets. Everyone relaxes and Sai Yeung Choi Street is filled with music, dance and performances of all kinds. On that night, both this performer and his dog stole the show, seeming to capture the overall atmosphere. The shirt flip, too, seemed a perfect ode to an approaching summer.”
Runner up Stone Tsang reveals both the beauty of Hong Kong’s bustling metropolis and its wilder trails in one shot.

Congratulations also to Stone Tsang for your beautiful landscape shot revealing two very different sides of Hong Kong and to @xianmichaela for making us laugh with your ‘umbrella man’ shot (a ‘So Hong Kong’ moment if ever we’ve seen one): you both win a luxury hamper from the Peninsula Boutique.

Runner up @xianmichaela captures a classic #SoHongKong moment.
