Insiders' hit parade

Three music industry insiders select their top three moments of 2012

MC Gold Mountain, rapper/producer

Pussy Riot: the fact they were arrested, imprisoned and silenced should come as a wake-up call for other artists. The rest of us are lucky to live in countries where we can get away with that.

Gangnam Style: Psy looks nothing like a typical "idol" and gives hope to other guys in their early 30s.

Hong Kong music: names shall not be named, but I'm seriously considering going back to law school just so I can hit all those bands that are breaking intellectual property laws.

Chris B, concert promoter

The Damned live in Hong Kong: the gig helped boost the reputation of live music in the city and showed there is a growing appreciation for good shows.

The Underground 100: the oldest (and best) live original music event series in Hong Kong celebrated its 100th show and attracted one of the best turnouts that we've had.

Freespace Fest: locally organised, locally attended and locally brilliant. Proof that people are interested in finding out more about local acts.

DJ Enso, owner, XXX Gallery

Album releases by Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar: Ocean's Channel Orange and Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D City albums are instant R&B and hip hop classics respectively. Raw emotion and excellent production.

Dub Phizix's live performance at XXX: Dub Phizix is doing big things along the borders of drum'n'bass, hip hop, dancehall, and grime. He absolutely killed it live on the big sound system.

That time I said "Do I need to quote Drake lyrics to make you understand me girl?" Vis a vis public versus private personas. Thank you again, Drizzy.
