Diva Faye Wong denied yesterday that her divorce from Li Yapeng involved extramarital affairs or money - and said she had no plans to become a nun.

She was responding to a wave of rumours following last week's announcement that they were divorcing after eight years of marriage.

Some media reports claimed that Li was unfaithful. Others said he had been violent towards her, and there were also claims that a monk had told Wong to perform "three kneelings and nine head knockings" 100,000 times to become a nun.

In yesterday's post on her mainland weibo social networking site, Wong wrote: "It was my decision to get a divorce. There's no third-party, no issues with my mother-in-law, and no financial issues. It's not agonising. We separated peacefully.

"We are changing the way we relate with each other. In our children's eyes, we are still one family."

The 44-year-old singer and actress thanked Li for "taking all this with love and rationality" and said the couple's charity, the Smile Angel Foundation, would continue to help children born with cleft palates.

Their daughter Li Yan was born with a cleft palate in 2006. Last week's announcement said Li, an actor who is two years younger than Wong, would have main custody of the girl. Wong's daughter from her first marriage to musician Dou Wei lives with her.

Announcing the break-up last week, Wong, who spent years living in Hong Kong but is now based in Beijing, said: "Our affinity and connection as a husband and wife in this life has come to an end."

Li added: "What I want is a family, but you are destined to be a legend."

There were no signs the relationship was on the rocks when they hosted their first charity gala dinner for the Smile Angel Foundation in Hong Kong in May.

The event, held on Li Yan's birthday, raised about HK$56 million, HK$30 million of that came from the sale of a painting by contemporary artist Zeng Fanzhi.

Singer-actor Nicholas Tse Ting-fung and Wong were in a relationship between 2000 and 2004. In 2006, Tse married actress Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi. The couple divorced in 2011.
