We may not be stuck in a polar vortex or fighting our way through blizzards to get to work, but it certainly feels like winter in Hong Kong these days. And with temperatures set to dip below 10C again this week, your skin will likely be crying out for some added moisture and protection. Stock up on the following products – some new, some tried-and-true – and you’ll be ready to weather any storm.

1. La Mer Crème de la Mer
It’s one of the most popular – and priciest (HK$1,450/30ml, HK$2,650/60ml) – creams on the market, but with good reason. After a few applications of this ultra-rich moisturiser, dry spots are softened, wind-chapped cheeks are soothed and skin is more resilient. We even use it on our toddler’s face if it’s looking dry or chapped, and by morning the skin is back to normal. Available at La Mer

2. Caudalie Le Crème Riche
Building on the success of its Premier Cru The Cream anti-ageing elixir, Caudalie has just released a richer version with nourishing waxes for intense hydration. Premier Cru la Crème Riche (HK$1,200) contains the brand’s signature resveratrol for collagen production and viniferine to prevent dark spots along with jojoba, mimosa and sunflower waxes. Available only at the Caudalie flagship on Gough Street, Central

3. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream
Think Hong Kong’s icebox-like apartments are tough on the skin? Try the super-dry climate of Phoenix, Arizona, or the moisture-sapping conditions faced by frequent swimmers. They are the two groups used in a “double torture” test to prove the hydrating power of Kiehl’s new Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration (HK$305). The lightweight cream has enriched hyaluronic acid and apricot kernel oil for 24-hour hydration. Available at Kiehl’s

4. La Prairie Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Cream
The key ingredients in La Prairie’s Swiss Ice Crystal collection are extracts of tiny flowers that bloom near the snowy summit of one of Switzerland’s highest mountains. If the buds can thrive under such extreme conditions, the beauty brand figured, surely they can help protect our skin against everyday cold and other environmental assaults. The cream (HK$2,800) can also be used for recovery from dermatological procedures or excessive travelling. Available at La Prairie

5. Melvita Argan Oil
If you haven’t incorporated oil into your skincare regimen, now is the time to start. Used alone or added to your moisturiser, naturally derived oils can boost hydration levels, soothe sensitive areas and even purify oily skin. Melvita stocks a range of organic beauty oils including argan (HK$320), which is known for its reparative and moisturising properties. Available at Melvita

6. Burt’s Bees Hand Salve
Our hands take a beating throughout the year, but are particularly susceptible to dryness in winter. This simple salve – with sweet almond oil, beeswax and vitamins – is designed for “driest of the dry” hands. Keep the 85g version (HK$208) next to the sink to use after washing hands and the 8.5g tin (HK$58) in your handbag for touch-ups on the go. Available at Mannings and Burt’s Bees

7. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lip
Chapped lips are the bane of our winter existence, so we were thrilled to discover La Roche-Posay’s new Cicaplast collection. Besides a mineral complex to stimulate the production of new cells and antibacterial agents to protect the skin, the barrier-repairing lip balm (HK$100) boasts five per cent panthenol to soothe cracked lips on contact. Available at Watsons, Mannings, and Derma Skincare Centres. See La Roche-Posay
