“While I am alive, there will be independence,” the 81-year-old said  after the presentation of the spring/summer 2016 Armani collection during Milan Fashion Week. Those words could also have summed up the mood in Milan, where the catwalk shows epitomised  independent thought and creativity.

The book, called simply Giorgio Armani, is a lavishly illustrated memoir of his life and work - and, among other things, underscores how the jacket is the rock around which the designer’s collections have been built.

The book's cover features a picture of Armani aged two.
