Fashion website Net-a-Porter goes fur-free; campaigners hail ‘powerful message’ move sends to the industry

The Outnet, Yoox and Mr Porter also adopt fur-free policy, and group’s head of sustainability says it aims to act as a catalyst for change in the fashion industry

Net-a-Porter has adopted a fur-free policy that will prevent items made with animal fur from being sold on its website. The policy also applies to parent company Yoox Net-a-Porter Group’s other fashion websites Mr Porter, Yoox, and The Outnet.

“Yoox Net-a-Porter Group going fur-free sends a powerful message across the fashion world, and to luxury brands in particular, that fur is firmly out of fashion. Designers and fashion retailers that continue to sell fur are peddling a product of immense animal suffering,” said Claire Bass, executive director of the Humane Society International UK.

Matteo James Moroni, head of sustainability at Yoox Net-a-Porter Group , said: “YNAP is on an important journey towards managing environmental impact responsibly. This journey began with the launch of our first sustainability initiative ... in 2009. ... We aim to act as a catalyst for change in the industry, sharing knowledge, innovating and leading by example.”

Fashion giant Armani announces he’s going fur free this year

The announcement follows a trend among fashion brands to stop using animal products. Armani went fur-free last year, while Stella McCartney’s spring 2017 collection featured shirts with messages such as “No fur” and “No leather”.

Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein have also pledged to keep their collections fur-free.

According to the Fur Free Alliance, a coalition of 40 organisations for the protection of animals, most fur sold globally is from farmed mink, fox, rabbit and chinchilla – killed with methods ranging from gassing to electrocution through the anus to breaking their necks, all done to preserve the fur in a good condition.

In the past campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has targeted luxury fashion brand Hermès, accusing the label of cruelty in the slaughter of alligators and crocodiles to make its signature Birkin and Kelly bags.
