Fashion has always been about testing the boundaries of the imagination. While some designers prefer to experiment with fabrics and cuts, others such as Elsa Schiaparelli (which is being resurrected in July under the leadership of famed designer Christian Lacroix) and John Galliano rose to fame thanks to their fantastical creations that border on art.
This season, designers have taken a page from their sketchbooks to create wearable art ranging from accessories to clothing. Leading the way is Miuccia Prada, whose collection featured Japanese-inspired florals that bloomed to life on her clothing (right) through prints, embroideries and appliqués.
Accessories from Balenciaga's branch-covered sandals to Celine's tongue-in-cheek pumps with painted toenails are whimsical. This season it's all about wearing your art.
