A storm is ebru-ing

A psychedelic spectrum of colours envelops viewers at the Hong Kong Arts Centre's Pao Galleries, where the latest paintings by Danilo Giannoni adorn the walls. This is Giannoni's second Hong Kong solo exhibition, titled "State of Matter".

Giannoni paints on water, using an ancient Turkish technique called ebru. Ink or paint is applied to the surface of a vat of specially treated water. The floating colours are then manipulated by either stirring them with needles or by blowing on them to achieve the swirls and circles. Giannoni takes this style one step further by adding silhouettes and figures.

"Painting on the water is a liberating process as it allows for fluidity of the colours and lines. There are no rules or boundaries and it allows me to free up my mind," he says. "I invite you to dream with me on the water, get lost in the colours, lines and swirls of my artwork and find your own interpretation of the pieces."

Art lovers at the show's launch included Daphne King Yao, Kevin and Reina Chau, Andrew Cohen, Marc Cansier, Luisa Menarin, Roger Chan and Veronica Pepe, Olivia Lo, as well as Jane Ho and Ana Rivera.

The exhibition runs until Monday.
