When it comes to shopping for a woman, it's all about thinking outside of the box. But men are practical creatures. They don't really care if you've spent a month searching for the ultimate jacket made by Italy's finest tailor - if they don't find the item useful, chances are it will stay in the wardrobe.

A study recently revealed that 85 per cent of a family's holiday shopping is done by women, and that's mainly because men don't have the time, desire or inclination to deal with Christmas gifts.

That's not to say they don't enjoy receiving presents - it's just that they have different expectations to women.

Most men are not impressed with marketing slogans like "limited edition" or "exclusive," because the concept doesn't make business sense to them.

Unless you're buying them a Rolex, or some other horological masterpiece that will appreciate in value, don't bother.

Gadgets are top of the list as they are functional and useful. This is one area where you will get top marks for something that is newly released or ultra high tech (here money talks. Bonus points if the item has an element of fun, such as Page Thirty Three's funky light boxes.

While women love anything that's shiny and new, men can't resist a bit of nostalgia. Go retro with a vinyl player if he likes music or a book on how to make old fashioned cocktails.

British designer Timothy Oulton has created a range of sporting goods made from vintage inspired leather, from boxing gloves to dumbbells. They are the ideal gift for men who like to work out in style.

When it comes to fashion, avoid anything fancy or overembellished. It's all about classic pieces (such as a blazer) or a portfolio that he can use for work. Add a luxe touch by choosing fabrics such as cashmere or exotic skins. Men tend not to splurge on themselves, so he will appreciate it.

Also take note of his hobbies and interests. If he loves a drink, why not buy him a limited edition wine or cognac that he can enjoy with his buddies? Does he like to play games? Dunhill's backgammon or mahjong sets will do the trick.

These are items that are useful but personal - a combination that's essential for all men's gifts. Check out our gift ideas that are sure to put a smile on his face this Christmas.
