A City of Sadness  

A deaf-mute photographer (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) lives through the disintegration of his family during Taiwan’s post-liberation period (1945 to 1949) in Hou Hsiao-hsien’s great 1989 film. October 3, part of Cine Fan programme  

 

The Martian  

While much of this is a one-man survival tale – and a science-heavy one at that – Ridley Scott’s incisive take on Andy Weir’s sci-fi novel marks the recent best for both its director and star, Matt Damon. Opens on October 1

Veteran  

Pitting a renegade cop against the abusive heir to a business conglomerate, Ryoo Seung-wan’s action comedy presents a thrilling snapshot of the social injustice prevalent in contemporary South Korea. Opens on October 1

 As Psycho did for showers and Jaws did for the open sea, Hideo Nakata’s slow-burning horror from 1998 was the classic hit that made video tapes and TV sets a terrifying sight. October 4, part of Cine Fan programme  

 

Love & Mercy  

By exquisitely avoiding the genre’s tired formula, this dual-biopic on Beach Boys' singer/songwriter/producer Brian Wilson rides the awkward charm of Paul Dano and John Cusack to strangely enthralling effect. Now showing
